How to Get Involved

The CSO offers several ways of becoming involved in community service.

Community Service Recruitment Fairs

Recruitment fairs are held every September and February. These give students a chance to talk with representatives from many community service agencies about the type of work that is available and the hourly commitment required and to sign up to work with the agency.

If you miss the fair, you can browse through the agency directory (pdf). The directory contains a complete listing of every agency and their respective contact people. You can call the contact person directly to discuss long-term service opportunities and arrange to work at the agency. Check the News & Events page for upcoming fairs.

Community Education Luncheons

These luncheons occur three times each semester and offer students the chance to learn about agencies in the community. They provide a forum for discussing valuable volunteer opportunities and ideas. Check the News & Events page for upcoming luncheons.

Long-Term Placements

Long-term placements are a great way to give back to the community, learn new skills and develop lasting relationships. CSO coordinates regular weekly placements ranging from one to eight hours per week (per semester or academic year). There are placements in many areas of interests for students. Our agency directory (PDF) will give you some information to get started.

Short-Term Projects

Taking part in a short-term project is a great way to begin your community service work! We can help you organize a project for your department or organization or you can join one of the projects that we sponsor throughout the year.

House Community Service and Sustainability Projects

This program builds upon the long-standing tradition of community service work among Smith students by inviting the houses to develop their own projects. For more information, visit the Residential Life Web site, talk to your house president or contact us.

CSO House Representatives

At the beginning of the academic year, each house elects a CSO house representative. CSO house reps promote house involvement in service activities on campus and in the neighboring communities. They encourage their housemates to volunteer to help local organizations—whether it involves giving blood or donating money or time.
