Witness to Catastrophe:
The Chorus in Senecan Tragedy
Monday, November 18, 2013 at 5:00 p.m.
Dewey House Common Room
The chorus of Senecan tragedy carried out many of the same
functions as its Greek predecessor, but its relationship to the
tragic action is fundamentally different. The Greek chorus
generally provides the audience with a larger context in which
to interpret the action of the play, while the Senecan chorus
often demonstrates the inadequacy or complete absence of
such an interpretative framework.
