Jane Stangl is Dean of the First-Year Class, after having spent a number of years as a member of the Exercise & Sport Studies faculty. She served as the Acting Dean of the First Year Class for three semesters during that time frame. She earned her B.S. from the University of Wisconsin—Stevens Point in pyschology and sociology, an M.A. in sociology from Bowling Green State University and her Ph.D. in physical cultural studies in sport from the University of Iowa. Dean Stangl teaches a graduate course on the sociocultural analysis of sport, and has taught IDP sessions on summer first year readings.
As an undergraduate Dean Stangl engaged in Southeast Asian studies at the University of Malaya in Kuala Lumpur. She enjoys reading, swimming, and travelling, and dabbles in calligraphy and woodwork. Her favorite past-time is golf where she also teaches occasional professional day clinics for women.
