Student Development Area to open Fall 2002: When CFLAC opens to students this fall it will house an area with six computers dedicated to student development work. When a student wishes to create a PowerPoint presentation, a digital slide tray, audio, video or image files, or even a fully interactive application this will be the place to come. Students will have access to scanners, a slide scanner, VCRs and an audio tape player. Students will be able to create electronic presentations and programs using tools like Adobe Acrobat, OmniPage, Photoshop, SoundRecorder, SoundEdit, iMovie, Cleaner, PowerPoint and Dreamweaver. Visit CFLAC in the basement of Wright Hall for more details.

New Server: CFLACMM: In conjunction with Systems staff, CFLAC is working to bring up a new, more powerful server called CFLACMM for CFLAC Multimedia. This new server has more than four times the drive space, twice the memory and twice the processor speed of the current CFLAC server. It will allow us to support more simultaneous media intensive projects, provide drive space for the student development area, and continue to support the Center and electronic classroom.

Windows XP Upgrade: The Windows XP operating system provides far better support for foreign languages than any of its predecessors. It allows full functionality in East Asian languages including left to right text and input methods for Japanese, Chinese and Korean. Once we have completed this upgrade we will no longer need to run third party software to support any of the languages taught at Smith.

Electronic Classroom Upgrade: Wright 233 currently houses 15 student Macintosh workstations and a presentation station. By Fall the student workstations will be replaced by Windows laptops. Moving to a laptop solution for W233 will allow us a greater degree of flexibility in the use of these machines. They will be part of a cart including wireless capabilities, hence giving us the potential for creating temporary electronic classrooms as needed.
