.......................
Each spring semester many students who are studying abroad apply for a
Praxis Summer Internship Stipend, to support a summer internship in the
US or abroad. To apply for a Praxis stipend from abroad please read the
following instructions:
To make the process run smoothly allow extra time for everything: extra time for locating and applying to an internship; extra time for
having your application reviewed; extra time for your checks to be processed.
Allow plenty of time for communicating by email, fax, and letter, particularly
if you're studying in a location where communications are delayed.
You may request the director of your JYA program to act as your Praxis
faculty adviser, provided that you are on a Smith program. You should
meet with your director to go over Praxis funding application, or to discuss
your internship plans, and goals. After such a meeting has taken place
please ask your faculty adviser to sign your application or send a confirmation that you and he/she have met. (See "Faculty Sign-Off").
If you are on a non-Smith study abroad program, email a description
of your internship and your written statements (see application instructions)
to a Smith faculty member. Be sure to ask your professor to email to confirm that
he/she has read your application. Use the Smith online directory for email
addresses ().
Send or fax the rest of your Praxis-funding application to the CDO.
Study abroad students
may have an extended Praxis deadline. You may submit your application
from February 1st, 2008 through the last day of your semester abroad or
by May 2, 2008, whichever occurs later.
Indicate on your application whether you want your first Praxis check
mailed to your permanent mailing address OR to your campus mailbox. Exception: If you are currently active for direct deposit for payroll,
your Praxis stipend will be direct deposited to that same account. If
you are not set up for direct deposit and your permanent address is not
in the United States, you may request that your checks be mailed to a
United States address of your choice.
Be sure to check your Smith email account routinely. Most Praxis
communications will go to your Smith email account, so it's important
to check it regularly.
The cost of faxing
is often very high overseas. To avoid the expense of faxing, plan
ahead to ensure that you have enough time in advance of the application
deadline to mail your application.
***FOR
STUDENTS ON STUDY PROGRAMS IN THE SOUTHERN HEMISPHERE OR ON THE SMITH
JYA PROGRAM IN HAMBURG OR GENEVA
If you are on a
Smith-approved study abroad program for the full academic year (fall and
spring semesters), and your school's longest break occurs during our (i.e.
Northern Hemisphere's) winter months, you may apply for Praxis funding
to assist you with expenses for an internship undertaken during that break. This situation pertains to students in the Southern Hemisphere and
in the Smith JYA program in Hamburg, Germany.
Submit your Praxis-funding
application at least one to two weeks before your internship is
scheduled to begin. If you have questions about the eligibility
of your internship before you submit your application email .
Students in the
Smith JYA program in Geneva, Switzerland: Due to the unique demands
of the Geneva schedule, you may start your internship during the mid-year
break and complete it over the summer.
Students in the
Southern Hemisphere: To your Praxis-funding application attach a copy
of your school's calendar indicating the start and end dates of your long
break. This copy must come from the school's web site, catalog, or from
another school publication.
Students in the
Smith JYA programs in Hamburg, Germany and in Geneva, Switzerland: The JYA office will provide Praxis with the starting and ending dates
of your terms; therefore, you do not need to send in this information
individually.
All other
Praxis regulations and requirements apply.
