Career Links for Persons with Disabilities

As a student with a disability there are important factors for you to consider as you search for internships or employment. You may have questions about your rights, disclosure, accommodations and which laws might apply to you. 

Below are resources to help you in the career exploration and preparation process, this list is by no means exhaustive but will hopefully help you as you develop and achieve your career goals.  Please feel free to schedule a one-on-one advising appointment with the Career Development Office or the Office of Disability Services to discuss the disclosure process and any additional questions you may have.

Americans with Disabilities Act - A guide for individuals with disabilities seeking employment.

American Association of People with Disabilities - A non-profit organization dedicated to empowering Americans with disabilities.  Website features employment opportunities as well as internships and fellowships.   

Career Opportunities for Students with Disabilities - A unique professional association comprised of more than 600 colleges and universities and over 500 major national employers.  COSD's mission is to improve the employment rate of college students and recent graduates with disabilities on a national basis.

Careers Online - Job search and employment information for people with disabilities. Compiled by the University of Minnesota Disability Services.

Disability.gov - A website connecting the disability community to information and opportunities.  

Employment Resources for the Disabled - For millions of people with disabilities, a stable and sufficient job may seem out of reach. Nearly 70 percent of adults who have some type of disability would like to work. That’s a staggering 18 million people who could be joining the workforce. Here you will find resources that could be of assistance to those with disabilities seeking employment.  

eSight Careers Network - eSight Careers NetworkTM provides online information and guidance for job seekers, career counselors, job developers and prospective employers about what works best for a range of disability employment issues.  
Guide to Disability Rights Laws:  This guide provides an overview of Federal civil rights laws and federal agencies that ensure equal opportunity for people with disabilities. 

Job Accommodation Network - JAN's Searchable Online Accommodation Resource (SOAR) system is designed to let users explore various accommodation options for people with disabilities in work and educational settings.

Job Resources for Individuals with Disabilities - Includes employer regulations, types of jobs, legal assistance, job board links and more!

Lime Connect -  A not for profit corporation founded in 2006 to represent a fresh, out-of-the box business approach in the disability talent space.

Mainstream  - “Moving people with disabilities into the workplace." A website containing articles of interest for the disabled community and job placement services in DC and Texas.

National Business & Disability Council
 - The National Business & Disability Council is the leading resource for employers seeking to integrate people with disabilities into the workplace and companies seeking to reach them in the consumer marketplace.

The Riley Guide - The Riley Guide is a directory of employment and career information sources and services on the Internet. It is primarily intended to provide instruction for job seekers on how to use the Internet to their best advantage, but recruiters and other career service industry professional will find information here to help them also.

Ticket to Work - This section of The Work Site contains information on the Ticket to Work and Work Incentives Improvement Act of 1999 (Public Law 106-170), and the Ticket to Work Program. Since the establishment of the office in 1999 and The Work Site in 2000, the goal has been to provide a focus within the Social Security Administration on matters affecting the employment of Social Security beneficiaries with disabilities.

World Institute on Disability - A collection of websites with information regarding employment for people with disabilities.  The sites vary from job posting sites to sites relating to Social Security or workplace rights.

Network 
Create an account on the online professional networking site LinkedIn and join groups such as the Minority Professional Network.  


Professional associations are groups of people who work in a specific industry or field of study.  You can attend meetings, special events or get to know professionals in some of the following organizations:
