The Community Engagement and Social Change (CESC) concentration admits a maximum of 15 students each year. Sophomores, juniors, and Ada Comstock Scholars are encouraged to apply. Priority will be given to students who have already completed the gateway course and one community-based learning course.
Applications will be reviewed by the Advisory Committee to determine the feasibility of the proposed course of study in the CESC concentration along with the student's intended or declared major. Accepted students will be assigned to an adviser who will oversee the progress through the program and approve internships.
Statement of Interest
In 200 to 300 words, explain why you would like to participate in the CESC concentration, including your response to these questions in the statement:
- How will the concentration fit in with your overall Smith experience?
- How will the concentration connect to your future goals?
Area of Interest
Examples of areas of interest include immigration and citizenship, public health, educational equity, law and policy, community organizing, community narratives, environmental justice, social movements, and art and activism.
Required Courses or Electives Completed
List any required and elective courses you have already completed toward the CESC concentration. (See courses).
Practical Experience
Please let us know of any internship, service learning, community-based participatory research, paid or volunteer community service experience.
For each, please include location, supervisor, a brief description and dates.
