Campus Safety

All members of the Smith community share responsibility for our collective safety and security. You can do much to protect yourself and your belongings and keep the Smith campus a safe place to live.

Around Campus

Run Smart, Run Safe
Whether you run to compete or simply to stay fit, you cherish your running time and the empowerment running gives you. Lots of women feel the same. Unfortunately women runners have been intimidated, harassed and even assaulted both on and off the campus.

Stay alert at all times. The more aware you are, the less vulnerable. Don't wear headphones, you may not be able to hear approaching vehicles or an approaching attacker.

Avoid wearing jewelry, carry identification and know the location of telephones along your route. Tell family and friends of your favorite running routes and write down or leave word of the direction of your run.

Run in familiar areas avoiding unpopulated locations.

When walking or running, especially at night, try to go with one or more friends.

At night, wear reflective material, use lighted and well-traveled roadways and avoid the athletic fields and the path along Paradise Pond. Be cautious about walking or running the campus periphery at night.

Trust your intuition about an area or a person. Avoid them if you are unsure. Use discretion in acknowledging verbal harassment by strangers. Project calmness and strength, keep your distance and keep moving.

Be vigilant on-campus. Call the Campus Police Department or off-campus the local police department immediately if something happens to you or someone else, or if you notice anyone or anything out of the ordinary.

Run with confidence, and with caution.

Firearms, Ammunition and Weapons
As defined by Massachusetts General Laws, Chapter 269, Section 10, are strictly prohibited in all college residences, in other college buildings and on the grounds of the Smith campus.

In Campus Houses and Buildings

Smith student residences are to be kept locked, with both door and room keys issued to each student annually. Front door locks are changed during times when the college is closed.

Academic and administrative buildings are open during business and/or class hours and are locked each night on a regular schedule. Students may ask for permission to work in buildings after hours but must be accompanied by another person at all times. The athletic complex is only open during posted hours to those with valid Smith ID cards and their guests.

Take responsibility for keeping your campus house safe. Keep exterior doors of campus houses and buildings locked. Do not prop them open or allow them to remain propped open if you find them that way. Carry your house and room keys and your Smith ID with you at all times, and promptly report the loss of any of these items.

Do not loan house keys to anyone. Promptly report lost keys to the residence coordinator/head resident and the student affairs office so that replacements can be ordered.

Keep the doors to student rooms locked at all times to protect yourself and your belongings.

Question anyone seeking admission to your house. Students should come down to the first floor to meet arriving guests. Do not allow visitors into your house unescorted.

Off Campus

Tell your friends about your plans and destinations when leaving your house, especially when you go off campus. Call your friends if your return will be delayed.

Learn effective techniques of self-protection. Attend educational workshops offered in your house. When you go off campus, carry the schedules for Five College and student shuttle buses and the phone numbers of local taxi services and friends or house mates with cars. Also carry an emergency reserve of cash in case you need to take a taxi back to campus.
