Smith College Parking Garage

In recent years, the number of cars belonging to students and driven to campus each day by Smith College employees has outstripped the number of parking spaces available on the campus and on neighboring streets. The congestion has been a problem for members of the Smith community as well as for people living or shopping in the area. As part of a comprehensive effort to address this problem, Smith will break ground in March 2000 for a 352-car parking structure on West Street (Route 66) in Northampton, adjacent to Garrison Hall, which houses the college's public affairs/college relations office. Designed by Arrowstreet, Inc., of Somerville, Massachusetts, the building will house cars of Smith employees and students and, occasionally, for special events, off-campus visitors. Building materials will include pre-cast concrete with steel, glass and zinc for the elevator, stair towers and columns. The construction timetable calls for completion of this project by mid-December 2000.
