fromthedirector1JessicaNicoll83DirectorandLouiseInesDoyle34ChieCuratorfromthedirectorAmuseumisaculturalhubaplacewherepeoplecometogether.AtSCMAthatsvisibleinouraudiencesandourprogramsbutitsalsoincreasinglyevidentinourcollaborativeapproachtoourwork.20112012wasayearotransormativepartner-shipsortheMuseum.WeorgedanimportantnewrelationshipwiththeKahnLiberalArtsInstitutethatactivateddialogueaboutourcollectiondevelopedconnectionswithacultyandscholarsthatunderpinnedourtwomajorshowsandjoinedorceswithseveralpeerinstitutionstotakepartintheYaleUniversityArtGalleryCollection-SharingInitiative.Alsoin20112012thevisionoourthree-year-oldstrategicplancontinuedtobearruit.Oneothegoalsotheplanistoembedourcollectionmoreullyinourprogrammingandtomakeitanindispensableresourceoracultyandstudents.WesawtheoweringothisobjectiveinExcavatingtheImageourpartnershipwiththeKahnInstitutewhichusesoneartworkromourcollectionastheinspirationoraninterdisciplinaryacultycolloquium.ThefrstprojectinJanuary2012broughtelevenacultymemberstogetherortwodaysoocusedstudyanddiscussionoGeorgeBellowsPennsylvaniaExcavation1907.FacultyembracedtheprojectandbasedonitssuccesswereplanningaseconditerationorJanuary2013.LastyearsmajorshowsCrosscurrentsandDebussysParismodeledoureorttouseourchanging-exhibitionprogramtoputourowncollectioninthespotlightandprovidedanopportunitytogeneratenewknowledgeaboutourholdings.CrosscurrentsgrewoutoSCMAcuratorialconsultantJohnJackPembertonIIIsfrstencounterswithourcollectionoAricanartadecadeago.HewasintriguedbyaceremonialaxeandapairostoolsromwhatisnowtheDemocraticRepublicotheCongoandoundhimselthinkingabouttheseobjectsashetraveledandstudiedothercollections.Crosscurrentsevolvedromthatmeditationandsituatedourworkswithinthecontextoalargergroup 2fromthedirectoroobjectsallowingustoexaminethetransmissionoculturalideasinthisregionoArica.DebussysParistookanareaorecognizedstrengthinourholdingsFrenchartromthelatenineteenthandearlytwentiethcenturiesandlookedatitthroughauniquelens.Theexhibitionwhichcelebratedthe150thanniversaryoDebussysbirthexploredthenotionothesoundscapeoParisexemplifedinworksinourcollection.Weteamedupwithacultyromtheartandmusicdepartmentstoorganizetheshowandthesecollaborationsyieldedoneoourmostpopularexhibitionstodate.PartnershipsalsoprovedproductiveintheworkoourStudentMuseumAdvisoryCouncilandtheleadershiproleitsmembersplayedinplanningtheSecondFridayprogramthatkickedoDebussysParis.Itwasaterrifceventthatbroughtmorethan900membersoourcampusandlargercommunityintotheMuseumoraestiveParis-themedeveningthatincludeddancingandcabaretmusic.Ourstrategicplancallsorbroadeningthescopeoourprogrammingtoincludemorenon-WesternartwiththespecifcpriorityoexpandingourAsiancollection.TothatendwehadaspecialopportunitylastyeartoborrowworksromtheYaleUniversityArtGalleryinordertomounttwocurriculum-integratedexhibitionsoAsianartTranscendingBoundariesandPursuingBeauty.AgrantromtheAndrewW.MellonFoundationmadepossibleourparticipationinYalesgroundbreakingCollection-SharingInitiative.AnothergrantthisoneromtheBrownFoundationInc.oHoustonallowedustoworkwithateamoexternalpeerreviewerstoevaluatetheSummerInstituteinArtMuseumStudiesSIAMSandtheMuseumsConcentrationastheyendedtheirpilotphases.Theassessorsreportafrmedthevalueobothprogramsbutalsohelpedusseesomeredundanciesbetweenthem.AsaresultwehavedecidedtoconcludeSIAMSwiththe2012summersessioninordertoocusourenergiesondevelopingtheMuseumsConcentration.WeareindebtedtotheleadershipoormerSCMAdirectorSuzannahFabingwhoestablishedSIAMSandMarionGoethalswhodirecteditduringthepastouryears.LastyearwesadlysaidgoodbyetoIsabelBrownWilson53anincrediblepartnerotheMuseumandtheCollegewhopassedawayinMarch2012.AnactivememberotheMuseumVisitingCommitteeIsabelworkedtirelesslytonurtureexcellenceineveryareaoSCMAsoperations.Mostrecentlyshecatalyzedourworkinmuseumstudiescreatinginvaluableeducationalopportunitiesoryoungwomeneagertolearnabouttheworldomuseums.WelearnedaterherdeaththatSCMAremainedinIsabelsthoughtsandplanssheletaverygenerousbequestortheacquisitionotwentieth-centuryAmericanartwhichisalegacythatwillenrichtheMuseum.FinallyIwouldberemissiIdidnotacknowledgeonelastcollaborationthatotheMuseumstawhoworkedtogethertoachievesomuchlastyearincludingcompletingtheredesignoourwebsitesmith.eduartmuseumthusulfllingamajorgoaloourstrategicplan.IamproudotheirhardworkandgrateulorallthepartnershipsbothwithinandoutsideSCMAthatenhancedourservicetoourcommunitythroughouttheyear.JessicaNicoll83DirectorandLouiseInesDoyle34ChieCurator
