2008 Outlook and History

2008 Outlook

Senior and opposite side lefty hitter Courtney Parker will lead the Pioneers in a strong bid for the conference title. Junior Bethany Weiss returns to contribute with superior front row blocking and devastating attacks from the middle. Junior classmate, Mikal Minarich, who set and hit outside last season, will return to the outside hitter position to devastate opponent's defensive structures. The tenacious Smith College defense will give rise to an explosive offense due to the expert passing of juniors Rachel Lackert and Brianne Connizzo in the backcourt. Firepower from sophomores Stephanie Bleyendaal, Laurel Belton and Alexandra Rissi will complement the fast paced offense coordinated by standout sophomore setter Lauren Michelle Martinez. The incoming class is filled with talent from all parts of the United States.

The 2008 campaign opens with a tri-match at home against Western Massachusetts teams from the Elms and Westfield State. The team will compete in the Brandeis Invitational, MIT Invitational, Johnson and Wales Invitational and the sixteen-team Hall of Fame Invitational in October. The NEWMAC Championship concludes the season with the winner receiving an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III NCAA Championship.
