2008 NEWMAC Track & Field Information

The track and field program at Smith College has a history of strength at the conference, regional and national levels. In 2007, Shayla Livingston qualified for the NCAA Championships in the 400m hurdles and finished fourth in the country earning All American honors. Other recent additions to the team's All American list include Sara Lewicke '04 in the steeplechase event, Genesis Fischer '00 (two-time AA in the shot put), Teresa Winstead '99 (three-time AA in relays and heptathlon), Mary Saari '98, Mary Spelman '98 and Kate Farneth '98 (two-time AA in relays) and Amy Saari '98 in relays.

Team members begin individualized strength-training and conditioning in mid-September. Indoor competition runs from January through March and includes weekly co-ed invitational meets throughout New England. The indoor season culminates with the national championship.

During spring break, the team often travels south for training and competition., The outdoor season begins in March with large invitational meets leading to the NEWMAC, New England, ECAC and NCAA outdoor championships.

Track & Field Takes Fifth in NEWMAC Championship
The Pioneers finished in fifth place today with 52 points in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Track & Field Championships held today at Smith. Wheaton College won the meet with 205 points followed by Springfield (203), MIT (178), Coast Guard (67), Smith (52), Mount Holyoke (28), WPI (25) and Babson (18).

Wheaton Women, MIT Men Capture NEWMAC Track & Field Titles
The women of Wheaton College and the men of MIT captured the 2008 New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference Track & Field Championships held today at Smith College. Wheaton (205 points) squeaked by Springfield (203 points) to reclaim the title that it had held from 1998-2006 while the MIT men took home their eighth consecutive title.

Tracksters Take Fifth at Aloha Relays
Junior Claire Edwards (Klamath Falls, OR) placed second in the 100m (13.14), third in the long jump (5.10m) and fourth in the 200m (27.35) to help the Pioneers to a fifth place finish at Bowdoin College's Aloha Relays. The host won the meet with 209 points followed by Colby (156), Southern Maine (122.5), Bates (99.5), Smith 61 and Mount Holyoke 26.

Smith Track & Field travelled to Mansfield, CT to participate in the Eastern Connecticut State University Invitational Tournament toady. The three school meet included Smith, ECSU, and Colby-Sawyer.
