Coach Carla Coffey has been Smith's track & field coach since 1992. She received both her undergraduate and master's degrees in physical education, health & recreation from Murray State University where she was a three-sport athlete in track, basketball and volleyball. A DGWS National Champion and All-American in the 100m and 200m hurdles in 1971, she also participated in the Pan American and Olympic Trials in 1972. Coffey, who has been coaching for 30 years, held prior positions at Western Kentucky University, University of California @ Davis, University of Kansas and Dartmouth College. During her tenure at those schools she produced 25 All Americans. Since her arrival at Smith she has produced 18 track & field All Americans. Throughout her career she has coached the 1990 World Junior Championship team in Bulgaria, 1993 World Indoors Championships in Toronto, 1995 World Indoors Championships in Barcelona, the 2000 World Junior Championships in Chile, and the 2004 World Junior Championships in Italy. A pioneer in women's track & field, Coffey is active in regional and national levels and has served on the inaugural combined NCAA Track & Field Rules Committee and presently is a member of the USA Track Coaches Association, USA Women's Track & Field Committee, and USA Women's Track Developmental Committee. She was recently (2003) selected to serve a three-year term as vice-president of the US Women's Track Coaches Association. Coffey has received numerous awards throughout her career including NEWMAC Coach of the Year in 1997 and 2004, 1995 Northeast Regional Coach of the Year and the US Women's Track Coaches Association 1997 Service Award. To date one of her proudest achievements is being the first female selected into her alma mater Murray State University's as well as Western Kentucky University's Hall of Fame. |
