Track & Field
The track and field program at Smith College has a history of strength at the conference, regional and national levels. The coaching staff takes pride in providing individual attention, superb technical advice, and intelligently and carefully supervised training programs for all athletes in all events. Each athlete sets individual goals in concert with the coaching staff. These goals establish the direction and purpose for the track & field program and make ambitions, hard work and risk taking exciting and satisfying. Athletes strive for improvements on personal records in their meet events as well as in daily practice. Every Smith athlete has the opportunity to reach her full potential.
Team members begin individualized strength-training and conditioning in mid-September. Indoor competition runs from January through March and includes weekly co-ed invitational meets throughout New England. The indoor season culminates with the national championship.
During spring break, the team often travels south for training and competition., The outdoor season begins in March with large invitational meets leading to the NEWMAC, New England, ECAC and NCAA outdoor championships.

Track & Field Hosts Tartan Invitational
Smith College hosted the annual Tartan Invitational on Saturday. Sixteen teams competed in the meet, with WPI winning the men's meet and Amherst College outdueling Worcester State for the women's team title.

Track & Field Places Third at Coast Guard Invitational
The Pioneers took to the 180 meter track at Coast Guard on Saturday in a five-way meet, aiming for more qualifying marks and personal bests. Despite the undersized track, the runners earned victories in four events, but the strongest performances of the day belonged to the field event athletes, led by the throwers, who posted five personal best marks on the day. Smith scored 119 points to finish in third place, behind Westfield State (156) and Eastern Connecticut State (154), and ahead of host Coast Guard (60) and Trinity (36).

Track & Field Competes at Wesleyan Invitational
After a month of quality training at home and on campus, the Pioneers returned to action on Saturday, competing at the Wesleyan Invitational. The meet featured a dozen teams from New England and New York and the large field sizes offered plenty of competition for the Pioneers, spurring them to serveral qualifying performances and multiple personal bests.

Carla Coffey Inducted into Kentucky Track and Cross Country Coaches Association Hall of Fame
Carla Coffey, Smith's track and field coach, will be inducted into the Kentucky Track and Cross Country Coaches Association Hall of Fame (KTCCCA)on Saturday, January 9th in Lexington, Kentucky. Coffey, who has coached at Smith since 1992, will be honored for not only having outstanding success as a coach but also for giving countless hours to the development of young people and to the running sports in Kentucky and throughout the country.

Smith Track & Field Athletes Posted Personal and Season Bests
In a final-tune up before Winter Break, the Pioneers traveled to Cambridge to compete in the Harvard Open. In a meet featuring Division I, II, and III competition, the Pioneers posted multiple personal and season best performances, led by senior Etta Grover-Silva '10(Arcata, CA), who met the national championship provisional standard in the pole vault.

Grover-Silva Earns All American Honors
Etta Grover-Silva (Arcata, CA) earned All American honors today with her 8th place finish in the pole vault (12'2.5" - 3.72m) at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships held at Marietta College in Marietta, Ohio. The event was won by Rachel Secrest of North Central College with a height of 13'2.25" -4.02m.
