Tennis
Smith College offers an excellent Division III intercollegiate tennis program during both the fall and spring season. The four court indoor facility affords the opportunity for players to sharpen skills in and out of the competitive season. The team has taken spring trips to such destinations as Arizona, California, St. Croix, Bermuda, Hilton Head Island, SC, Williamsburg, VA, Florida, and Las Vegas, NV. These trips have allowed Smith athletes significant cross-regional play and have often led them to national rankings.
Smith tennis has been a significant regional and often, national contender in Division III tennis. The Pioneers qualified and competed as a team in the 1988, 1993 and 1994 NCAA Championships earning rankings as high as 7th in the nation during those years. Individually, Smith has had a player or doubles team in the NCAA Individual Championships each year from 1988-1999, with four earning All American status.
Smith is a member of the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) with competition and championships held in the fall. The New England Women's Intercollegiate Tennis Tournament (NEWITT) highlights the fall tournament schedule and includes 27 colleges and universities from the regional area. The NEWITT tournament is the oldest and largest regional tennis event in the country and historically is hosted in the Pioneer Valley, using facilities at Amherst, Mount Holyoke, Hampshire, University of Massachusetts and Smith. Smith's superb tennis faciliites with 12 outdoor lighted and 4 indoor courts and the proximity of excellent tennis facilities at other five college institutions make it possible for many tournaments to be hosted in the area.
