Soccer
Soccer became an intercollegiate varsity sport in 1976 and has developed into one of the finest programs in New England with respect to success, results, and facilities. The Pioneers recorded their 200th victory in 1996, placing them in the top 10 nationally for most wins. The Smith program has produced 18 tournament championships and 17 post-season appearances. Numerous individual awards achieved by our athletes' range from All-American to All-Conference selections.

Coach Nielsen Resigns as Soccer Coach
Smith College is losing its head soccer coach Phil Nielsen, who compiled a 71-59-15 record in eight seasons. Phil leaves Smith at the end of June and has decided to pursue other opportunities.

Soccer Falls to MIT in NEWMAC Quarterfinals
The Pioneers, seeded fifth in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Women's Soccer Championship, fell to fourth seed MIT 2-0 this afternoon on a rain-soaked field at Steinbrenner Stadium in Cambridge. With the loss, Smith ends the 2007 season with an overall record of 5-10-1 while the Engineers (12-5) advance to the semifinals of the championship.

Wellesley Defeats Smith Soccer in OT
The Pioneers fell 2-1 in overtime to Wellesley yesterday in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) competition to end the regular season in fifth place in the conference standings.

Soccer Falls 0-1 to MIT in Double Overtime
After Smith dominated play for 100 minutes MIT forward Amy Ludlum '08 (Mission Viejo, CA) was able to counter off a Smith corner kick and get the win for MIT at 101:30. With the loss Smith falls to 5-8-1(4-4-0), while MIT improves to 11-4-0(6-2-0).

Smith Soccer Defeats Clark in OT, 2-1
Senior Janine Olthuis (Cavan, Ontario)headed the ball into the goal off a corner kick by classmate Caitlyn Colman-McGaw (Manchester, CT) in the 95th minute to secure the 2-1 victory over New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) rival Clark University this afternoon. With the win, the Pioneers improved to 5-7-1 and 4-3 in the conference while the Cougars fell to 6-7-2 on the season and 3-4 in NEWMAC competition.

Smith Soccer Drops Tight Match to Springfield
After both teams battled for 85 minutes with the score still 0-0, Springfield College took the victory off a penalty kick by Delaney Cantrall '09 (Santa Paula, CA) at 84:49. With the loss Smith drops to 4-7-1(3-3-0), while Springfield improves to 12-2-0(5-1-0) on the season.

Smith Soccer Defeats Mount Holyoke 3-2
Sophomore Valerie Driscoll (Keene, NH) scored the game equalizer and Hailey Bird (Salt Lake City, UT) tallied two goals to give the Pioneers a come-from-behind 3-2 defeat of New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) and valley rival Mount Holyoke College. With the win, Smith improved to 4-6-1 overall and 3-2 in conference play while the Lyons fell to 2-10-0 overall and 0-5 in the NEWMAC.

Sophomores Etta Grover-Silva (Arcata, CA) and Dalyn Houser (Atlanta, GA) tallied second half goals to give the Pioneers a 2-1 win at New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) rival WPI this afternoon. With the win, Smith improved to 3-6-1 overall and 2-2 in conference action while WPI fell to 6-6 on the season and 2-2 in NEWMAC competition.
