2010 Outlook and History
2010 Outlook
Smith lacrosse returns eighteen of twenty players in 2010. Graduating co-captains, attacker Blair Rapalyea and defender Dani Schmandt, left a talented young team. The attack returns three of its top scorers. Senior captain, Carolyn Whiting, along with senior Michelle Walsh and sophomore Meaghan Fileti will provide the squad leadership and scoring power. Sofia Naknikian-Weintraub and Alex Page will be called upon to provide consistency and determined urgency to the attacking unit.
Executing with speed and tenacity on both ends of the field will be sophomore midfielders Phoebe Hopkins (third leading scorer in 2009, co-leader in draw controls) and MK Pasini. This hardworking duo tallied 97 groundballs and 51 draw controls. Sophomore midfielder Bethany McGann will be called upon to serve as one of the team's draw specialists. The drive and intensity of these four, coupled with a year of experience together, points toward an aggressive presence in the midfield.
The defense returns a quick and cohesive group led by senior captain Kate Murdough, junior Liz Mauro and sophomores Pasini and Phoebe Hopkins. Murdough, who finished the regular season leading the NEWMAC in both caused turnovers and ground balls, will be looked upon to anchor the defense. Rounding out the defense will be Megan Smith, Liz Guyman and Rachel Wick with returning goalkeepers Chelsea Henderson and Liz Niehoff.
Solid experience and hard work in 2009 has the 2010 squad excited to continue playing and living its motto: "strong together". The incoming first years will add tremendously to the mission of the program and success on the field. The team's focus for this year is finishing in the top of the NEWMAC and ultimately a conference championship.
