2009 Outlook and History

2009 Outlook

Smith field hockey has invested hard work and dedication in preparation for the 2009 season. Smith looks to continue to improve following a strong showing in 2008 where the team produced more than double the wins from the 2007 season. Returning for Smith are senior captains, Anika Goodhue, Mary-Kate Long and Margaret Winter. All three captains will add a strong voice and leadership that will help the team reach its goals. Also returning are seniors Rebecca Capute, Kaitlyn Murdough, Lindsey Nguyen, Michelle Walsh and Christine Ricci. This very strong class will be integral to the team's success addding strength to each line of the field.

On the defensive end, Winter protects the cage with three years experience behind her and the trust of her teammates with her. Murdough, winner of the team's "brick wall" award, will lead the defense with Walsh, who has a strong defensive presence on the field. Joining Murdough and Walsh are junior goalkeeper Courtney Murphy, who finished out last season starting in the cage, and sophomore field player Ashleigh King. The midfield will be led by Long and Goodhue, winner of the team's "unsung hero" award. Joining them are junior Natalie Wickles and sophomores Emily Howe and Phoebe Hopkins. Hopkins received the team's MVP award last season after leading the team in points with 14 goals and 1 assist. She was also selected to the NEWMAC All Conference first team as well as the NCAA All Region second team.

On the front line the speed of Ricci, Nguyen and the decptive stick skills of Capute will pose a challenge to the opposition's defense. Capute has been a point contributor in each of her three years at Smith including her strong showing last season notching five goals with five assists which earned her a spot on the NEWMAC All Conference second team. Joining these three are sophomores Sora Harris-Vincent and the team's second leading scorer, Sarah Knowles, who contributed with seven goals last season. The Pioneers are confident that they will continue to deveop and produce a skillful and composed game of hockey to play toes to toes with their competitors.
