Field Hockey

Intercollegiate field hockey at Smith began in 1971 as one of the college's first three varsity sports. Since then the program has grown to include opportunities for regional and national recognition through Seven Sisters championship play and through membership in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC). Traditional non-conference rivals include Amherst, Elms, Western New England College and Westfield State.

Field Hockey Athletes Receive Post Season Honors
Phoebe Hopkins (Philadelphia, PA) and Rebecca Capute (Easton, MD) were selected to the 2008 New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) All Conference team while Mary Kate Long (Boylston, MA), Natalie Wickles (Hatfield, MA) and Margaret Winter (Purchase, NY) were all named to the 2008 NEWMAC Academic All Conference team.

Field Hockey Falls to Wheaton 2-1 (OT) in NEWMAC Quarterfinals
The Smith Pionners fell to Wheaton 2-1 in overtime this afternoon in the NEWMAC Champtionship Quarterfinals. With the win, Wheaton improved its record to 12-6 overall while Smith finished the season 7-11.

Keene State Defeats Smith Field Hockey 3-1
Forwards Carly Benning (Brewster, MA) and Elizabeth Rand (Peterborough, NH) scored within just over a minute of each other in the second half of action tonight to give Keene State its fifteenth victory of the season. The Owls improved to 15-4 on the year while Smith fell to 7-10.

Field Hockey Drops Game to League Leading Springfield
In a game a game featuring the top ranked team in the New England Women's and Men's Conference (NEWMAC) the Pioneers fell 3-0 to the Pride of Springfield College. With the win Springfield improves to 12-5 (8-0). Smith now stands at 7-9 (2-6) on the year.

Smith Field Hockey Defeats WPI, 8-3
First year Phoebe Hopkins (Philadelphia, PA) scored three goals this evening to lead the Pioneers past New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) rival WPI. With the victory, Smith improved to 6-8 overall and 2-4 in the conference while WPI dropped to 9-6 overall and 3-3 in the NEWMAC.

Smith Field Hockey Wins Thriller in Double OT
Sarah Knowles (North Kingstown, RI) pushed a rebound past MIT goalkeeper Keri Dixon to give the Pioneers the victory in double overtime over the Engineers in a NEWMAC contest this afternoon. With the win, the Pioneers improved to 6-7 (1-4) while the Engineers fell to 5-9 (0-6).

Senior Trina Campbell (San Anselmo, CA) tallied the game winning goal last night in Smith's 3-1 defeat of Western New England College. With the victory, the Pioneers improved to 5-7 while the Golden Bears fell to 1-13.

Field Hockey Falls 2-1 at Clark
The Pioneers fell to New England Women's and Men's Athletic Confererence (NEWMAC) rival Clark University 2-1 last night in Worcester, Massachusetts. With the victory, the Cougars improved to 5-7 overall and 1-3 in the NEWMAC while Smith dropped to 4-7 overall and 0-4 in conference competition.
