Field Hockey
Intercollegiate field hockey at Smith began in 1971 as one of the college's first three varsity sports. Since then the program has grown to include opportunities for regional and national recognition through Seven Sisters championship play and through membership in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC). Traditional rivals Wesleyan and Amherst also remain on the schedule.

Westfield State Field Hockey Defeats Smith 4-3
Michelle Walsh (Northampton, MA) and Amanda Burns (Hillsdale, NY) each scored two goals for their respective teams in an action packed game tonight in Northampton with Westfield taking home the 4-3 victory. With the win, the Owls improved to 5-4 while the Pioneers fell to 4-6.

Field Hockey Falls at Mount Holyoke
The Pioneers fell to valley and New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) rival Mount Holyoke College 5-1 last night in South Hadley. With the loss, the Pioneers dropped to 4-5 overall and 0-3 in the conference while the Lyons imporved to 6-3 and 2-1 in NEWMAC competition.

Babson Field Hockey Defeats Smith 3-0
The Smith Pioneers fell to Babson 3-0 this afternoon in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) contest. With the win, Babson improved to its record to 7-3 overall and 1-1 in the NEWMAC while the Pioneers fell to 4-4 overall and 0-2 in conference play.

First year Phoebe Hopkins (Philadelphia, PA) scored unassisted in the first overtime period to give the Pioneers a 2-1 victory over Regis College this evening in Northampton. With the win, Smith improved to 4-3 while the Pride fell to 0-11.

The Pioneers opened their conference schedule with a loss to Wellesley College 6-0. With the defeat Smith fell to 3-3 (0-1) on the season while the Blue of Wellesley improved to 4-2 (1-0).

The Pioneers scored three first half goals last night against Elms College to defeat the Blazers 3-1 in Chicopee, Massachusetts. With the victory, Smith improved to 3-2 overall while Elms fell to 1-6.

Field Hockey Posts Overtime Victory
In an evenly played contest with teams exchanging goals throughout the game, it was sophomore Natalie Wickles (Hatfield, MA) who tallied the game winner 6:20 into overtime to give the Pioneers the 5-4 victory over host Nichols College last night in Dudley, Massachusetts.
