Intercollegiate field hockey at Smith began in 1971 as one of the college's first three varsity sports. Since then the program has grown to include opportunities for regional and national recognition through Seven Sisters championship play and through membership in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC). Traditional non-conference rivals include Amherst, Elms, Western New England College and Westfield State.

Field Hockey Loses 3-1 at Keene State
The Pioneers ended their 2009 season at Keene State College last night in a hard fought, non-conference contest and fell 3-1. Smith concluded the season 3-13 overall while the Owls improved to 15-4.

Field Hockey Falls 3-2 at Springfield
Sophomore Phoebe Hopkins (Philadelphia, PA) and senior Anika Goodhue (Bennington, VT) each tallied second half goals but the Pioneers fell to New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) rival Springfield College 3-2 last night in Springfield. With the victory, the Pride improved to 9-8 overall and 5-3 in the NEWMAC while Smith dropped to 3-12 on the season and 0-8 in the conference.

Wheaton gets past field hockey 2-0
In their final home game of the season, the Pioneers fell to Wheaton 2-0 despite inspired play for Senior Night. The loss drops the Pioneers to 3-11 overall, 0-7 in NEWMAC, while the Lyons improved to 6-10 overall, 2-5 in NEWMAC.

The Pioneers traveled to WPI last night and fell 5-1 in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action. Smith dropped to 3-10 on the season and 0-6 in the league while WPI improved to 10-4 overall and 4-2 in the NEWMAC.

MIT defeats field hockey 3-1
The Pioneers fell to New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) opponent MIT on Saturday evening on the turf at Enrio Fermi High School in Enfield, CT. The loss drops the Pioneers to 3-9 overall, 0-5 in NEWMAC. MIT improved to 11-4 overall, 2-3 in NEWMAC.

Clark Defeats Field Hockey 7-1
The Pioneers hosted the Cougars in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) game, with Clark prevailing 7-1. The loss dropped Smith to 3-8 overall, 0-4 in the NEWMAC. Clark improved to 6-4, 3-1 in the NEWMAC. Senior Rebecca Capute (Easton, MD) led the offensive charge for the Pioneers, scoring Smith's lone goal in the first half.

The Pioneers fell 2-0 to non-conference opponent Westfield State last night in Westfield, Massachusetts. The Owls improved to 6-6 with the victory while Smith dropped to 3-7 on the season.

Field Hockey Falls to Mt. Holyoke in OT
Playing against NEWMAC rival Mt Holyoke, Smith put forth a valiant effort but lost a heartbreaker in overtime as Mt Holyoke scored on a penalty stroke. The loss drops the Pioneers to 3-6 overall, 0-3 in the NEWMAC, while Mt Holyoke improved to 5-4, 1-2 in the NEWMAC.
