Cross Country
The cross-country program at Smith College has a proud tradition of excellence. Smith runners compete to feel the thrill of victory and to enjoy the physical challenges.
Since its inception in 1981 the cross-country program has successfully competed at the conference, regional and national levels. Smith has sent numerous athletes to Nationals, most recently Nora Youngs '09 in 2005, 2006 and 2008. Smith alumnae Gwen Young '91, placed fourth in the 1990 Open New England Championships and was an NCAA runner-up earning All American honors.

Cross-Country Finishes Fourteenth at NCAA Regionals
The Pioneers finished fourteenth out of forty-seven schools today at the NCAA New England Regional Cross-Country Championships held under rainy conditions at Twin Brook Recreation Center in Cumberland, Maine.

Cross-Country Individuals Make NEWMAC All Conference and Academic All Conference
Senior Christine Dzialo (Belchertown, MA) earned New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Cross-Country All Conference and Academic All Conference honors while Ulrika Botzojorns (Bolton, VT), Anna Cressotti (Southampton, MA), Elizabeth Rosenfield (Wayland, MA) and Hania Thomas-Adams (Deerfield, MA) were recognized for their academic achievements.

Senior Christine Dzialo (Belchertown, MA) finished in eighth place while the team took fifth at the 2009 New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Cross-Country Championship today held in Franklin Park.

Cross Country Finishes 34th at Open New Englands
The Pioneers competed today at the Open New England Cross Country Championships (Divisions I, II & III) and finished in 34th place with 996 points, out of 49 schools. Brown University won the event with 130 points.

Smith Competes in Purple Valley Classic
The Pioneers travelled to Williams College to compete in the Purple Valley Classic against some of the top cross country teams in Division III. Smith finished in 8th place out of 12 teams with 232 points.

Wellesley and Coast Guard Men Win Smith Cross Country Invitational; Smith's Cressotti Finishes First in Women's Race
Both Wellesley and Coast Guard placed five runners in the top twelve to win the women's and men's races today on Smith's 5k course. Smith senior Anna Cressotti (Southampton, MA) and Springfield College sophomore David Birdsall (Madison, CT)were the individual race winners.

Ben Raphelson Joins Cross-Country Staff
Grinnell College graduate, Ben Raphelson, has joined the Smith College Cross-Country coaching ranks as a graduate assistant coach. Raphelson, who has enrolled in the Masters Program in the Exercise and Sport Studies Department with an emphasis on coaching, is due to receive his M.S. in May, 2012.

Nora Youngs '09 (Penacook, NH) earned New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) All Conference Team honors while Youngs, Christine Dzialo '10 (Belchertown, MA) and Emily Yen '09 (Potomac, MD) were named to the 2008 NEWMAC Academic All Conference team.
