Cross Country

The cross-country program at Smith College has a proud tradition of excellence. Smith runners compete to feel the thrill of victory and to enjoy the physical challenges.

Since its inception in 1981 the cross-country program has successfully competed at the conference, regional and national levels. Smith has sent numerous athletes to Nationals, most recently Nora Youngs '09 in 2005. Smith alumnae Gwen Young '91, placed fourth in the 1990 Open New England Championships and was an NCAA runner-up earning All American honors.

Smith Cross-Country Finishes 14th at NCAA Division III Regionals
The Pioneers concluded their 2007 season with a fourteenth place finish out of fourty-seven teams at the NCAA Division III Regionals held at Harkness Park in Waterford, Connecticut.

Cross Country Takes Fourth at NEWMAC Championship
Junior Nora Youngs (Penacook, NH) was the women's individual champion of the 2007 New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Cross-Country Championship held today in the rain on Smith's 5,000m course. Youngs crossed the finish line in 19:09.80 and earned Runner of the Year honors with her performance.

MIT Women and Men Sweep NEWMAC Cross Country Championship
The Engineers of MIT swept both the women's and men's races this morning in the rain to take the 2007 New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) titles. Today's victory was the 10th consecutive title for the men while the MIT women last won the event in 2003.

Smith Cross Country Finishes 3rd at Seven Sisters Championship
The Pioneers finished 3rd at the annual Seven Sisters Cross Country Championship. Smith runners, Anna Cressotti '10 (Southampton, MA) and Nora Youngs '09 (Penacook, NH), , took 1st and 2nd place respectively, out of 94 participants, with times of 18:47 and 18:54.

Cross Country Places 31st at Open New Englands
Sophomore Anna Cressotti (Southampton, MA) finished 19th (18:52)overall and first for the Pioneers at the Open New England Cross Country Championship held at Franklin Park in Boston. The Pioneers placed 31st with 748 points out of 44 teams.

Smith Cross-Country Wins Harrier Classic
Sophomore Anna Cressotti (Southampton, MA)was the first collegiate runner to cross the finish line today at the Harrier Classic held at Franklin Park in Boston. Her third place finish helped the Pioneers win the nine team event with 81 points.

MIT Women and Men Win Smith Cross-Country Invitational
MIT swept the women's and men's races today at the Smith College Cross-Country Invitational and had the individual race winners. First year Nicole Bucala won the women's 5K race in 19:46.78 while junior Jake Ruzevick (Coronado, CA)took first in the men's 8K race in 26:58.07.
