Crew

Rowing was introduced at Smith in 1916 and has since developed into a rich campus tradition-one that gained new depth in 1972, when Smith crew engaged in its first intercollegiate competition. Now, in addition to its strong varsity program, the college has a novice program that enables students with no previous rowing experience to learn the sport and compete at the intercollegiate level. In developing the commitment, discipline and perseverance that rowing demands, Smith's varsity and novice crew programs emphasize variety in training, a clear understanding of technique and the fun that can be found in the pursuit of both individual and team excellence in this ultimate team sport.

The team competes in both fall and spring. The season begins in October with three-mile "head" races. Smith competes in the prestigious Head of the Charles regatta in Boston, racing both the clock and teams from around the country on the treacherous Charles River race course. After three months on indoor conditioning and a training trip during spring break, the team is eager to get back on the water in late March to compete against such adversaries as Holy Cross, Williams and Trinity. The championship series includes the NEWMAC championship, the New England Rowing Championship and the ECAC National Invitational Collegiate Regatta.
