2007-2008 Outlook and History
2007-08 Outlook
The 2007-08 season begins a new era for Smith basketball with Lynn Hersey taking over the helm as head coach. The program returns eleven players from a combination of last season, student-athletes who went abroad last year and players returning from injury. The Pioneers have depth and versatility at the guard/small forward position with the return of leading scorer Berit Schelde and Smith basketball's best defensive player Lisa Marie Vuono as well as the addition of junior Meredith Murelli. These three players will lead the way and can play two or three different positions. Junior Courtney Parker, Smith basketball's most improved player award recipient last season, established herself as one of the conference's leading rebounders. Helping Parker on the boards and in the paint are forwards Leonora Pepper and Margie Soler along with center Jannah Handy. Stability at the point guard position with juniors Sarah Posnak and Lakeisha Richardson will make a difference for Smith. Adding depth to the guard position are seniors Jenn Daley and Michelle Lai.
First year arrivals Nicole Robitaille (Gorham, ME) and Jessica Welk (Arlington, WA) could make an immediate impact for the Pioneers at guard. Both have the skills to handle the ball and the rebounding skills to step in at the small forward position. The Pioneers look to utilize their experience to build on their qualification for the 2006-07 NEWMAC tournament and continue to have their goal be a NEWMAC title.
