The first collegiate women's basketball game was played in 1893 on the Smith campus by Smith women. That event set in motion the series of advancements that have made the collegiate game and the Smith program successful.

Smith basketball mirrors the greater competitiveness of today's women's game and much is demanded of a Smith basketball player, but the rewards are high. Smith plays a challenging non-conference schedule and competes in the highly competitive New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC), which is granted an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament.

The basketball program has seen some outstanding talent through the years. In addition to eight 1,000 point scorers, the program boasts an All-American, two Academic All-Americans, and two NEWMAC Players fo the Year as well as numerous NEWMAC All Conference and Academic All Conference team members. The goal for Smith basketball is to continue to build upon the success of the program with athletes who are dedicated to educating both the mind and body, while striving for excellence in the classroom and on the court.

Women's Basketball: Pioneers Sink Coast Guard
Three Pioneer women scored in the double digits today, as Smith took down opponent Coast Guard Academy. Smith is still looking to secure home court advantage for the upcoming NEWMAC playoffs, as they are now at 11-8 on the season (8-6 in NEWMAC). Coast Guard, on the other hand, dropped to 5-14 today (3-11 in NEWMAC).

Schelde Leads Pioneers to Victory Over Mount Holyoke
#24 Berit Schelde (Holstebro, DENMARK) scored a game high 22 points tonight to lead the Pioneers to a 53-35 victory over host Mount Holyoke College. With the win, Smith moves to 10-8 on the season (7-6 in NEWMAC), while MHC drops to 6-14 (4-9 in NEWMAC).

Beavers Dam Pioneer Offense
The Pioneers dropped their game to conference leader Babson College this afternoon, 67-36. With the loss, the Pioneers slide to 9-8 (6-6 in NEWMAC), while the Beavers remain undefeated with 12 conference victories (16-3 overall).

Cold Shooting Dooms Smith Basketball
In the battle for 3rd place tonight, Smith lost 61-44 to the visiting WPI Engineers. With the loss, Smith falls to 9-7 on the season (6-5 in NEWMAC), while WPI improves to 12-6 (8-3 in NEWMAC).

Schelde and Dean Lead Pioneers to Victory Over Wellesley
#24 Berit Schelde (Holstebro, DENMARK) and #25 Daron Dean (Brush Prairie, WA) teamed up to tally a combined 29 points and 9 rebounds as they led the Smith basketball team to a win over NEWMAC opponent Wellesley College.

Lyons Claw Their Way to a Win
What promised to be an exciting game ended in heartbreak for Smith this afternoon. Wheaton proved to be too tough to overcome, as Smith's 4-game win streak came to an end with their 43-61 loss to visiting Wheaton College.

Pioneers Stay Hot and Beat the Cougars
Smith rolled to an easy 74-57 victory over host Clark University, snapping a 10 game losing streak to the Cougars over the past five years.
