SMITH CREW SELECTED TO NCAA NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP

Northampton, MA:  The Smith College crew has received an invitation to participate in the 2004 NCAA Division III National Crew Championship which will be held on May 28-29 at the California State University Aquatic Center in Sacramento, California.  The Pioneers are among a field of six institutions that will race for the national title. Other schools participating are Trinity College (CT), Williams College, the United States Coast Guard Academy, Ithaca College and the University of Puget Sound.  Two heats will be held on the morning of May 28th.  If the Pioneers win their heat, they automatically qualify for the grand final that will be held on May 29th. If they fail to win, they will have another opportunity to qualify in repechages on Friday afternoon. The scoring for each boat will equal the place finished.  To determine the team winner, points for each boat will be added and the team with the fewest points wins.  If there is a tie, the team with the highest placing individual boat wins.

Smith’s varsity eight is undefeated and has taken the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC),
New England and Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) National Invitational Collegiate Regatta titles this spring. The Pioneers are required to field two boats of eight rowers and a coxswain.
