Volleyball Drops Match at Wheaton
Northampton, MA: The Pioneers fell to New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) opponent Wheaton College in three sets (25-13, 25-14,25-17) last night in Norton, Massachusetts. With the win, Wheaton improved to 9-8 overall and 1-3 in league play while Smith fell to 3-8 overall and 1-3.
Senior Bethany Weiss (Windham, NH) and junior Laurel Belton (San Bernardino, CA) recorded six kills each to lead Smith while junior Lauren Martinez (Phoenix, AZ) tallied 12 assists. Sophomore Courtney Faria (Pocasset, MA) contributed with 7 asssists and senior Brianne Connizzo (Demarest, NJ) had 14 digs.
Wheaton jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the first set and maintained a four-point lead at 16-12 when they used a 7-0 run to put the set out of reach. Smith had an early 3-0 lead in the second set but Wheaton cut the deficit and took the lead at 8-7 and then put together a 14-5 run to take the second set. The third set followed suit with the teams close early and Wheaton putting together another run for the victory.
The Pioneers have the weekend off before hosting NEWMAC rival WPI on Tuesday, October 6 at 7 pm in Ainsworth Gym.
