Volleyball Falls to Babson in 3 Sets
Northampton, MA: Though the Pioneers (1-3, 0-1 in NEWMAC) came out strong on the night of their first NEWMAC match, they were defeated by Babson College (2-5, 1-0 in NEWMAC) in 3 sets.
The first set was a close one, as there were never more than 4 points separating the two teams. However, Babson made a late scoring run and won the game 25-21. The scores for the second and third sets were identical (Smith 16, Babson 25).
Though the Pioneers didn't come away with a win, they still left their fans with a lot to talk about. The team recorded blocks from senior Bethany Weiss (Windham, NH), junior Stephanie Bleyendaal (Boston, MA), and junior Shakwana Etienne (West Orange, NJ).On the offensive side, junior Laurel Belton (San Bernadino, CA) led the team with 9 kills, 2 service aces, and only 2 errors. Coach Mills commented about Laurel, "She kept us in the game with her smart placement of the ball and her devastating serves".
Smith is back in action at home this Saturday at 1:00 as they look to pick up their first NEWMAC win against MIT.
