Tennis falls to Wheaton in NEWMAC semifinals
Cambridge, MA: The Pioneers returned to the courts at MIT a little over twelve hours after completing their quarterfinal victory over Mount Holyoke. Facing #1 seed Wheaton, the Pioneers fell 5-0 to end their fall season.
Wheaton took control of the match early, sweeping all three doubles matches. The #1 doubles team of sophomores Jaimi Inskeep (Warrenville, IL) and Gianna Teague (Gahanna, OH) fell 8-0 to Sarah Geocaris and Catherine Teague, while juniors Allyson Hawkins (Plainfield, NH) and Margaret Steiner (Madison, CT) lost at #3 doubles to Ellen Van Faasen and Roz Chesky 8-2. At #2 doubles, sophomore Clair Oblamski (Elm Grove, WI) and senior Alanna Dick (Winthrop, ME) played a tight match until the end, as Wheaton's Allesandra DiOrio and Katherine Knies took the final two games for a 9-7 victory.
The Lyons wrapped up their victory early in singles play. At #2 singles, Catherine Teague defeated Gianna Teague 6-0, 6-0. Roz Chesky then earned the fifth point for Wheaton at #6 singles, defeating Margaret Steiner 6-0, 6-2. The remainder of the matches were halted once Wheaton had secured the victory.
Wheaton faces off against #2 Wellesley in the finals on Sunday afternoon. Wellesley advanced after defeating #6 MIT 5-2.
