Tennis Defeats Valley and NEWMAC Rival, Mount Holyoke, 6-3
Northampton, MA: The Pioneers traveled to valley and New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) rival Mount Holyoke College this afternoon and brought home a hard fought 6-3 victory. With the victory, Smith improved to 1-2 overall and in NEWMAC while the Lyons fell to 1-3 overall and 1-2 in conference competition.
Numbers one and three doubles won their matches while singles positions two, three, four and six also were victorious. Gianna Teague (Gahanna, OH) and Jaimi Inskeep (Warrenville, IL) teamed up at one doubles to defeat Nahree Han and My Unh Nguyen 8-5 while Claire Oblamski (Elm Grove, WI) and Alanna Dick (Winthrop, ME) won a tiebreaker 7-3 to defeat Sarah London and Carly Peltier 9-8. Number two doubles combination of Holly Reich (Roslyn Heights, NY) and Isabel Pal (Constanta, Romania) lost their tie-breaker 3-7 and fell to Natlaie Hsiang and Sarah Moore 8-9.
In singles play, Pal lost to Han in three sets, 3-6, 6-4, 1-6. Reich defeated Moore 6-2, 6-3; Inskeep defeated London, 6-2, 6-1; Teague defeated Nguyen, 6-2, 3-6, 6-1; Oblamski lost to Heather Richardson, 4-6, 5-7 and Dick fought back after dropping the first set to Peltier to win 5-7, 6-3, 6-1. Coach Christine Davis was very proud of her team stating "they left it all on the court, they were determined and did a great job."
The Pioneers will host NEWMAC rival Wheaton College on Saturday, Oct. 3 at 1 p.m.
