Smith defeated by Babson 8-1
Northampton, MA: Smith's #2 doubles team of senior Alanna Dick (Winthrop, ME) and sophomore Clair Oblamski (Elm Grove, WI) played a flawless match to defeat Babson's Lorena Becerra and Liz Sheerin 9-7, earning a point for Smith in an eventual 1-8 loss.
Dick and Oblamski's tenacious play highlighted an overall strong effort from the Pioneers. Leading 7-6, Smith's #2 team had a chance to serve for the match, but Babson's duo fought back. Dick & Oblamski came right back to break and then served out for the win.
The match remained undecided until late in the singles play, as Smith played fairly even with Babson. Babson took control of the match by capitalizing on long points, while Smith earned points on short points by hitting winners. Smith displayed heart & determination, playing hard until the final point in each match. The doubles teams showcased their good tactics and shotmaking and with consistancy will be a strong point for the rest of the season.
Sophomore Gianna Teague (Gahanna, OH) and freshman Holly Reich (Roslyn Heights, NY) both played singles matches that were tests of endurance. Playing at #2 singles, Reich was defeated 7-5, 7-6 (7-5) by Rebecca Stone in a tough two set loss. At #4 singles, Teague and opponent Monica Mercer went three sets, with Mercer eventually prevailing 3-6, 6-4, 7-5.
Smith travels to Mount Holyoke for at match on Sept 29 at 4 pm.
