Squash defeats Wellesley in season opener
Wellesley, MA: The Pioneers notched a 7-2 victory over Wellesley, sweeping the third through ninth position matches. Three Pioneers earned their first collegiate dual match victories. Senior co-captain Elizabeth Guyman (Seattle, WA) won in the fourth position, senior Kelsey Radwilowicz (Belchertown, MA) won at fifth position, and senior Su Fu (Beijing, China) won in the eighth position.
Guyman defeated Cara Kaufman 11-4, 11-9, 11-2, while Radwilowicz dispatched Emaline Surgenor 11-4, 11-3, 11-4. Fu won her match over Margot Sulmont 11-5, 11-4, 11-6. The victories by these seniors display the hard work and development of the team, as none of the players on Smith's roster played squash prior to enrolling at Smith.
Senior co-captain Alice Reznickova (Kromeriz, Czech Republic) won a thrilling 3-2 victory at third position, defeating Ally Ewing 11-8, 4-11, 11-6, 9-11, 12-10 in a closely contested match. Sophomore Clair Oblamski (Elm Grove, WI), joining the team after fall tennis season, moved up a spot to seventh position and won her match 11-6, 11-2, 11-5 after only one week of practice. Sophomore Catie Blunt (Needham, MA) defeated Lauren Dow 11-8, 11-6, 12-10 and sophomore Xizhu Zhao (Beijing, China) defeated Rachel Amrhein 11-8, 11-5, 11-9 for the final two points.
Coach Tim Bacon noted that these two women's colleges typically play tight matches and have battled back and forth over the past few seasons. Smith ended the 2009 season ranked one place ahead of Wellesley in the national rankings. Defeating Wellesley to begin the season gives the Pioneers a lift as they continue their 2009-10 campaign. They look to continue on a positive trend when Northeastern visits on Saturday November 14 at 10 am.
