Wheaton defeats soccer 2-0

Norton, MA: Playing top ranked conference opponent Wheaton, the Pioneers fell 2-0 in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action on Saturday. The loss dropped Smith to 3-11-1 overall, 2-5-1 in NEWMAC. The Lyons improved to 15-2-1 overall, 6-1-1 in NEWMAC.

The Pioneers were not intimidated by playing the top team in the NEWMAC, holding Wheaton scoreless for the first 31 minutes of play.  The Lyons held a 21-4 advantage in shots, but Smith's defense held tough until Cassey Muse converted from Emily Hough for a 1-0 lead at 31:14.  The score remained even until the 72nd minute, when Kaitlyn Mawicke scored off an assist from Lyndsey McManus to provide the final margin.  Smith goalkeeper Lindsey Gregor (Bradenton, FL) made 6 saves.

Head coach Stephanie Gabbert applauded the Pioneer's effort in the game.  "We played well today and executed our game plan.  We just came up short in goals.  I'm proud of the team's play today, especially against such a strong conference opponent."

The Pioneers look to notch a victory in their final conference game of the season on Tuesday October 27 at 4 pm at home.
