Soccer Shutsout Mount Holyoke, 2-0
Northampton, MA: Sophomore forward Ellie Theurer (Gainesville, FL) scored the game winning goal and assisted on an insurance goal as Smith shutout valley and New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) rival Mount Holyoke College 2-0 this afternoon in South Hadley, Massachusetts.
With the victory, the Pioneers picked up their first conference win of the season and improved to 2-7-1 overall and 1-1-1 in the NEWMAC while the Lyons fell to 1-9-0 overall and 0-3-0 in the league
Theurer scored the game winner just 3:26 into the contest when she dribbled through the Lyons' defense and went one-on-one with Mount Holyoke's keeper Ingibjorg Magnusdottir (Reykjavik, Iceland).
Although the Lyons had a 22-6 advantage in shots, it was Smith who tallied an insurance goal in the 31st minute when Theurer crossed the ball into the box from the left side that found first year Emily Peake (Penobscot, ME). Peake scored from point blank range and tallied her first collegiate goal of the season.
Pioneers' keeper Lindsey Gregor (Bradenton, FL) made 11 stops en route to her second shutout of the year while Magnusdottir made one save in the Lyons' loss. The Pioneers are in action again on Saturday when they host NEWMAC rival Coast Guard on Saturday at 1 p.m.
