Babson College Soccer Defeats Smith 1-0
Northampton, MA: The Beavers of Babson College defeated the Pioneers, 1-0 in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) contest this rainy Saturday afternoon. With the loss, Smith drops to 1-7-1 overall, 0-1-1 in the NEWMAC while the Beavers improve to 8-3-1 on the season and 1-1 in the NEWMAC.
Coming out strong early, Babson was able to score at the 11 minute mark when junior Ellen McCurdy (Weston, MA) recovered an inbound corner kick from first year Kelly Hanly (Cortlandt Manor, NY) and shot it inside the center of the goal narrowly escaping the fingertips of Smith's diving goalkeeper, sophomore Lindsey Gregor (Bradenton, FL).
Smith came out of halftime more aggressive and playing better defense by holding Babson to fifty percent less shots and taking three shots of their own. Coach Gabbert was pleased with her team's overall performance. "Besides Lindsey's efforts in goal, senior Hailey Bird (Salt Lake City, UT) did a phenomenal job anchoring our defense. Babson is a good team, one of the better teams in the conference and region, so to be able to stay with them for 90 minutes and hold them to only one goal was a great accomplishment for our team. Though we could have done a better job of taking advantage of our opportunities, we adjusted well to Babson's style of play."
Babson outshot Smith 10-0 in the first half and had a 9-2 corner advantage in the game. Smith's Gregor played all 90 minutes for the Pioneers and made 9 saves. Smith's head coach praised Gregor for "having a great game in goal once again especially against a high scoring team like Babson."
NEWMAC play will continue on Tuesday as Smith travels to valley rival Mt. Holyoke College for a 4:30 PM game.
