Soccer Falls at Elms
Northampton, MA: In a hard fought battle at Elms College, the Pioneers fell 1-0 last evening in a non-conference game. With the victory, Elms improved to 2-4 on the season while Smith dropped to 1-5.
Elms senior forward Krystyna Gagne (Methuen, MA) scored the only goal of the game in the 66th minute to give the Blazers the victory. Gagne tallied the goal following a save by Smith keeper Lindsey Gregor (Bradenton, FL) as she controlled the rebound and then found the back of the net. Elms had an opportunity to increase the score but a impressive lunging save by Gregor denied the goal in the 89th minute.
Sophomore forward Ellie Theurer (Gainesville, FL) paced Smith with three shots while Yen Hee Chang (Seoul, South Korea) took two. Midfielder Emma Coffin (Carrabassett Valley, ME), Valerie Driscoll (Keene, NH), Bryce Bludevich (Colchester, VT), Cara Gubbins (Dennis, MA) and Emily Peake (Penobscot, ME) each added one shot to Smith's attack.
Gregor finished the game with six saves while the Blazers goalie Molly Corse (Bernardston, MA) made four in the shut-out.
The Pioneers return to action on Saturday and open New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play when they host Wellesley College at 1 p.m.
