Smith Loses to Wesleyan
Northampton, MA: The Pioneers fell 7-0 to non-conference opponent Wesleyan University this evening. With the victory, the Cardinals improve to 1-1 while Smith dropped to 1-3.
Smith's defense played well in the first half anchored by senior Etta Grover-Silva (Arcata, CA) who "played hard, tough and tried to lead her team" according to head coach Stephanie Gabbert. Grover-Silva had Smith's lone scoring opportunity in the second half with a hard and long shot on goal from midfield but was denied by Wesleyan sophomore goalkeeper Clare Colton (Montclair, NJ) for the keeper's only save in the game. Other Pioneers' who took shots in the game included first year Chelby Wakefield (E. Longmeadow, MA) and senior Nicole Widger (Clarksville, MD).
Despite Smith's smothering of the Cardinals' players throughout the game, first year Laura Kurash (Voorhees, NJ) led the Cardinals with four goals and two assists. Her four goals ties a Wesleyan record for goals in a game. Additionally, her 10 points in the game breaks Wesleyan's school record. Also contributing for the Cardinals were junior Dasha Battelle (Brookline, MA) with one goal scored and one assist and first year Mikaela Curtin (Wellesley, MA) with two assists.
Motivating her team to look forward, Coach Gabbert enccouraged them to "get tougher and be ready to battle." Smith will be in action again this Saturday at 1pm when they play host to Manhattanville.
