Smith Soccer Wins Season Opener Against MCLA

Northampton, MA: The Pioneers defeated Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts (MCLA) this afternoon 1-0 in their season opener. With the win, Smith improves to 1-0 while MCLA drops to 0-2.

In the first half, Smith dominated the Trailblazers by holding them to just two shots and drawing three fouls. Smith on the other hand took 5 shots, one being a goal and five corner kicks. Smith's only goal was scored by sophomore midfielder Emma Coffin (Carrabassett Valley, ME). At the 40:40 mark of action, she took a cross from classmate Emma Shapiro (Newton, MA) straight into the back of the net in a hard yet dramatic fashion .

MCLA increased its offensive pressure in the second half by taking 10 shots but was denied each time by Smith sophomore goalkeeper, Lindsey Gregor (Bradenton, FL). In her first game and shutout for Smith, Gregor made six saves while Jen Wahner (Hartwick, NY) made five stops for MCLA. In addition to great defense anchored by senior captain, Hailey Bird (Salt Lake City, UT), other outstanding performances for Smith included sophomore Ellie Thuerer (Gainesville, FL) who created numerous scoring opportunities and senior Etta Grover-Silva (Arcata, CA) who anchored the midfield.

The Pioneers will face host Keene State Wednesday, September 9th.
