Wheaton gets past field hockey 2-0
Enfield, CT: In their final home game of the season, the Pioneers fell to Wheaton 2-0 despite inspired play for Senior Night. The loss drops the Pioneers to 3-11 overall, 0-7 in NEWMAC, while the Lyons improved to 6-10 overall, 2-5 in NEWMAC.
Families and friends gathered on the wet, windy evening to honor the team's eight seniors in a ceremony prior to the game. Seniors Kaitlyn Murdough (Hinsdale, NH), Mary Kate Long (Harrisville, NH), Michelle Walsh (Northampton, MA), Anika Goodhue (Bennington, VT), Rebecca Capute (Easton, MD), Lindsey Nguyen (Brockton, MA), Christine Ricci (Somers, CT) and Margaret Winter (Purchase, NY) shared messages with their teammates and all were starters for the game.
The teams played back and forth for the first few minutes, with neither team able to mount an attack. Wheaton then moved the ball to their offensive end, and Emily Asack scored off an assist from Margaux Bolte at 15:17. On a breakaway several minutes later, Ashley English passed the ball ahead to Jessica Strock, who found the cage at 19:58 to give Wheaton a 2-0 lead. The Lyons kept up the pressure for remainder of the half, earning 5 penalty corners to 1 for Smith.
The Pioneers found their offensive rhythm in the second half, earning 5 penalty corners and notching 8 shots. They were unable to slip the ball behind goalkeeper Andrea Bagley, who earned the shutout by making 9 saves. Winter made 7 saves in goal for the Pioneers.
The Pioneers next travel to conference foe Springfield on Tuesday October 27 at 7 pm. The Lyons travel to Wellesley on Tuesday for a 3:30 pm contest.
