Clark Defeats Field Hockey 7-1
Holyoke, MA: The Pioneers hosted the Cougars in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) game, with Clark prevailing 7-1. The loss dropped Smith to 3-8 overall, 0-4 in the NEWMAC. Clark improved to 6-4, 3-1 in the NEWMAC. Senior Rebecca Capute (Easton, MD) led the offensive charge for the Pioneers, scoring Smith's lone goal in the first half.
Both teams came out with energy, with possession going back and forth for the first 10 minutes. Clark scored on a breakaway, as Mel Melkonian got by the defense to score the first of her 4 goals at 10:19. Another quick breakaway by Clark led to another score at 12:10, with Melkonian feeding teammate Lauren Blake for the 2-0 lead. Smith had their first half chances, as they had 8 penalty corners in the half, and 12 overall, to Clark's 5 total corners. Smith almost put the ball in the net, beating goalkeeper Kathryn Dawsey, but Kate Condon came up with a defensive save on the goal line. Smith broke through on a corner at 28:44, as Capute corralled the rebound from sophomore Emily Howe's (Harwinton, CT) initial shot and found the back of the cage. The goal brought the Pioneers into halftime in a 3-1 deficit.
The Cougars came out firing in the second half, tallying 3 more goals in the first 5 minutes after the break. Katherine Rowe scored, and Blake and Melkonian each added another goal. Smith picked up the pace for the remainder of the half, but could not overcome the deficit. Melkonian finished out the scoring with a goal at 54:51.
