Field Hockey Falls to Wellesley
Wellesley, MA: The Pioneers fell 7-1 to Wellesley College in the first New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) game of the year. The loss dropped Smith to 3-4 overall (0-1 NEWMAC) while Wellesley improved to 5-3 overall (1-0 NEWMAC).
Wellesley got on the board early with an unassisted goal by Whitney Reid. The Blue stayed on the attack, as Molly Morrow fed Katie Frett on a penalty corner. Sally Scudder made it 3-0 on an assist from Emily Lewis. The Pioneers mounted an attack at the end of the first half, with sophomore Phoebe Hopkins (Philadelphia, PA) dodging past the Wellesley goalkeeper and depositing the goal in the open net, bringing the score to 3-1 at the end of the first half.
Wellesley would put the game away in the second half, with goals by Scudder, Morrow, Lewis, and Natalie Gitz. Smith goalkeeper Margaret Winter (Purchase, NY) played well, facing 51 shots from Wellesley and recording 21 saves in the contest. Wellesley goalkeeper Sarina Sawyer saved 2 shots.
Coach Ginsberg thought that the team had come out flat for the game. "We didn't really show up today and play our game. We've got a week of practice ahead of us to regroup and ready for our next conference game." Smith travels to NEWMAC opponent Babson College on Saturday, October 3 at 12:30pm.
