Field Hockey Defeats WNEC, 3-2 in OT

Northampton, MA: Sophomore forward Phoebe Hopkins (Philadelphia, PA) tallied the game winning goal in last night's come-from-behind, 3-2 defeat of non-conference opponent Western New England College at Golden Bear Stadium. With the victory, the Pioneers improved to 3-3 on the season while WNEC fell to 1-8.

The Pioneers took an early lead in the first half on a goal by senior forward Rebecca Capute (Easton, MD) at the 2:25 mark. Smith controlled the tempo and took 14 shots to the Golden Bears 5 in the remainder of the half, but sophomore goalkeeper Lindsey Orzsulak (Longmeadow, MA) made seven of her thirteen saves for WNEC that held the score to 1-0 at the half.

Amy Hedberg (Guilford, CT) and Katy Vogl (Cazenovia, NY) teamed up in the second half for the Golden Bears for back-to-back goals that gave WNEC a 2-1 advantage. Vogl scored the equalizer at 46:28 on a feed from Hedberg and less than two minutes later, Vogl assisted on Hedberg's goal. WNEC maintained the lead until 53:02 when Smith tied it up on a converted penalty corner by Zoe Sperber (Bennington, VT) with an assist from Nia Spooner (Bronx, NY).

The game remained deadlocked until Hopkins tallied the game winner for Smith 10:26 into overtime.  Senior goalkeeper Margaret Winter (Purchase, NY) picked up the win for the Pioneers as she allowed 2 goals and made five saves.  The Pioneers open New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) competition on Saturday when they travel to Wellesley College for a 1 p.m. game.
