Hopkins Leads Smith Past Elms, 11-0

Northampton, MA: Sophomore Phoebe Hopkins (Philadelphia, PA) tallied three goals with one assist to lead the Pioneers to an 11-0 win over the Blazers this afternoon in a non-conference contest at Elms. With the victory, Smith improved to 1-2 on the season while Elms fell to 1-3.

In the first fourteen minutes of play, Smith took a 3-0 lead on goals by Emily Howe (Harwinton, CT), Natalie Wickles (Hatfield, MA) and Hopkins.  Senior Rebecca Capute (Easton, MD) assisted on Hopkins' goal as she controlled the ball up the middle and fed the ball to Hopkins.  Twenty minutes later, the duo connected again for Smith's fourth goal to give the visitors a 4-0 lead at the half.

The Pioneers put the game out of reach for Elms in the second half scoring seven goals.  Kaitlyn Murdough (Hinsdale, NH) scored three minutes into the half off a penalty corner and Howe tallied her second goal of the game from a feed from Hopkins at the 42 minute mark. Hopkins registered her "hat trick" three minutes later.  Senior midfielder Anika Goodhue (Bennington, VT) found the net for Smith on a penalty stroke while Mark Kate Long (Harrisville, NH) tallied her first goal of the season after 53 minutes of action.

First year Nomindari Goulden (Rutledge, PA) came off the bench and tallied twice for Smith, scoring her first goals as a collegiate player.  Margaret Winter (Purchase, NY) and Sora Harris-Vincent (Calais, VT) each played a half in goal for the Pioneers with Winter stopping one shot.

The Blazers had just one shot on the afternoon while Elms first year goalkeeper Alexandra Bonavita (Agawam, MA) made 30 saves.
