Volleyball Falls to Coast Guard in NEWMAC Quarterfinals

Northampton, MA: Smith volleyball ended its season tonight as Coast Guard Academy defeated the Pioneers 3-0 (25-14, 25-20, 25-23)in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) quarterfinal match tonight in New London, CT.

The Bears of Coast Guard came out strong in the first set winning 25-14. The second set proved to be tight, but Coast Guard was able to go on a run scoring 8 of the last 10 points to go up 2-0. Although the third set was back and forth the whole way Coast Guard closed out the match with a 25-23 victory to advance to the NEWMAC semifinals.

The Pioneer's lone senior, Courtney Parker (Berlin, MD) tallied 6 kills in her final match for Smith volleyball. Bethany Weiss '10 (Windham, NH) added 7 kills, 1 service ace, and 4 blocks, while teammate Mikal Minarich '10 (Hobart, IN) also had 7 kills on the night. Jacqueline Sparagna '12 (Los Angeles, CA) added 6 kills for the Pioneers. Smith's Brianne Connizzo '10 (Demarest, NJ) led both teams in digs with 12.

Coast Guard will face top-seeded Springfield College in Springfield Friday at 5 pm.
