Smith Volleyball Downs Coast Guard in 5

Northampton, MA: The Pioneers defeated the Bears of the Coast Guard Academy this evening in 5 sets (19-25, 25-13, 25-27, 25-23, 15-12). Smith fought back from being down 2 sets to 1 to take the match in the decisive fifth set versus their NEWMAC foe. With the win the Pioneers improved to 10-12 (4-2) on the year. The Bears fell to 10-10 (3-3).

For Smith, Mikal Minarich (Hobart, IN) contributed 15 digs, 13 kills, 2 blocks, and 1 service ace. Teammate Courtney Faria (Bourne, MA) added 24 assists, 16 digs, 5 kills, and 4 service aces. Bethany Weiss (Windham, NH) finished with 7 kills, 6 aces, and 3 blocks. Defensively, Brianne Connizzo (Demarest, NJ) added 20 digs.

For the Bears, Nicole Gurr (Acton, CA) led the way with 12 kills, 9 digs, and 4 blocks. Teammate Carin Sweeney (Woodbury, MN) added 9 digs and 7 kills. Defensively, Jessica Anderson (Kalamazoo, MI) finished with 18 digs.

The Pioneers return to action Saturday October 18th as they travel to Keene State.
