Volleyball Finishes Third at Johnson & Wales Tournament
Providence, RI: The Pioneers finished 2-2 at the Johnson & Wales Tournament for a third place finish. The host school won the event (4-0), followed by Plymouth State (3-1), Smith (2-2), Wheaton (2-2), UMass-Dartmouth (1-3) and Suffolk (0-4). Senior Courtney Parker (Berlin, MD) had a great weekend and brought home All Tournament Team honors.
In Friday matches, Smith defeated Suffolk 25-13, 25-15 and 25-12. Sophomore Alexandra Riss (Scottsdale, AZ) had a team high 10 kills while classmate Lauren Martinez (Phoenix, AZ) tallied 10 set assists with 3 service aces. In the second match of the day, the Pioneers defeated UMass-Dartmouth 25-18, 25-22, 22-25, and 25-18. Junior Bethany Weiss (Windham, NH) led the team with 7 kills and 3 blocks while Martinez registered 31 set assists.
This afternoon, Smith faced Plymouth State and Johnson & Wales and dropped the first match 3-0 and the second 3-1. In a close match against Plymouth State, set scores were 25-27, 24-26, 19-25. Parker led the Pioneers with 7 kills and 4 blocks and Mikal Minarich (Hobart, IN) added 6 kills with 11 digs. In the second match, the Pioneers fell to their hosts 15-25, 19-25, 25-17, and 21-25. Parker again was outstanding with 10 kills and 5 digs while Martinez added 5 kills, 7 digs, and 15 assists.
The Pioneers resume New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action on Tuesday, October 7 at 7 pm when they host WPI in Ainsworth Gym.
