Volleyball Defeats Umass-Boston in Five Sets
Northampton, MA: Smith volleyball traveled to Cambridge, MA this afternoon to take on conference foe, MIT, and UMASS-Boston. With a 3-0 loss to MIT and a 3-2 win over UMass-Boston, the Pioneers move to 3-6 on the season.
In the 3-0 (25-14, 25-20, 25-11) loss to MIT Courtney Parker '09 (Berlin, MD) tallied 5 kills, Bethany Weiss '10 (Windham, NH) finished the match with 3 kills, while Lauren Martinez '11 (Phoenix, AZ) assisted on 11 points for the Pioneers.
In Smith's second match of the day against UMass-Boston, the Pioneers were able to capture the victory in five sets, 3-2 (19-25, 15-25, 25-20, 25-19, 15-13), after dropping the first two sets. Big numbers for the Pioneers came from Parker with 9 kills, 1 service ace, and 2 blocks. Mikal Minarich '10 (Hobart, IN) put up 12 kills, 1 service ace, and 9 digs for smith, while Martinez finished the match with an impressive 24 assists and 1 service ace.
The Pioneers are back in action Tuesday, September 23 at 7 pm as they take on Clark University in Worcester, MA.
