Track & Field Takes Fourth in NEWMAC Championship

Northampton, MA: The Pioneers finished in fourth place today with 81 points in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Track & Field Championships held at Mount Holyoke College. MIT won the meet with 248 points followed by Springfield (175), Wheaton (155), Smith (81), WPI (60), Babson (27), Mount Holyoke (15) and Coast Guard (9).

Senior Caitlin Ritchie (Meriden, CT)  had the top field finish for Smith when she threw a season best 35.36 distance in the javelin earning her a 1st place finish. First year Ruby Western (Burlington, VT) had an outstanding day which included a personal record, 5th place finish and New Englands qualifying time of 40.19 in the hammer throw. She also finished 3rd in the discus (36.71) and 4th in the shot put (11.11). Sophomore Shakwana Etienne (West Orange, NJ) also had a great outing, qualifying for New Englands in the discus with a personal best throw of 32.19 and 8th place finish, a 2nd place finish in the shot put with a 11.19 mark and a 13th place finish in the hammer throw. Other notable field performances were given by junior Etta Grover-Silva (Arcata, CA) who placed 2nd in the pole vault, first year Mary Cote (Gardiner, MT) who took 5th in the long jump with a season best jump of 5.13 and 7th in the triple jump (10.28) and junior Jasmine Liverpool (Brooklyn, NY) who took 9th (9.89) and marked a season best in the triple jump. 

On the track, senior Nora Youngs (Penacook, NH) placed 3rd in the Steeple chase at 11:59.00, while junior Anna Cressotti (Southampton, MA) ran a personal best 4:46.80 in the 1500m and finished 3rd and the 4x400 relay team (Alina Ainyette (South Orange, NJ), Cressotti, Uzuri Sims (San Diego, CA) and Kristin Peck (Bethlehem, NY) ran a season best, qualified for ECAC's and placed 4th with a time of 4:07.54. Other notable track performances were given by Sims with a personal best, 8th place finish and New Englands qualifying time of 1:01.06 in the 400m and a 7th place finish in the 100m, Cote who took 8th in the 100m, first year Katie Eison-Washington (Portland, OR) who finished 7th in the 200m and 9th in the 100m and Peck finishing 6th in the 800m
