Squash Drops Opening Match at Howe Cup

Northampton, MA: Joanne Poon (San Francisco, CA) and Mercedes Pepper (Mendocino, CA) each won their opening matches of the 2009 Howe Cup, but the Pioneers fell to Northeastern 7-2.

Poon, at number eight, defeated Cassidy Meed 9-0, 9-1, 9-4 while Pepper at number nine, took her match 9-2, 9-1, and 9-5 against Liz Kafin. Sophomore Meg Oliverio (Boston, MA) had a close match at number three but took a 3-1 loss.

The team will face 30th ranked Colgate on Saturday at 2 p.m.   This match-up will be a tough one for Smith as Colgate was the team that defeated the Pioneers 5-4 in the playoff for #31-32 in last year's national team championship in Princeton.
