Softball Drops Doubleheader at Springfield

Northampton, MA: The Pioneers dropped a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) doubleheader, 1-3, 0-7, this afternoon at Springfield College. With the loss, Smith fell to 6-23 overall and 3-11 in the conference while the Pride improved to 14-18 overall and 8-6 in NEWMAC competition.

In the first game, Springfield scored twice in the first inning. With two outs, Aimee Cassella (Southington, CT) singled and scored what would be the winning run on a double by Michelle Wlosek (Nutley, NJ).  Wlosek advanced to third on a Smith error and scored on Bryn Worrilow's double. The Pride scored their third run in the 6th inning on three Pioneer errors.

The Pioneers scored their only run in the sixth inning when Megan Kiefer (Oak Park, IL) led off with a double, advanced to third on a ground out and scored on a single by Erin Quinn (Northbrook, IL).  Senior Samantha Rhodes (Mendon, MA) registered the win on the mound, allowing one earned run on four hits while striking out six.  Emily Hiltzik (Westbury, NY) took the loss for Smith giving up two earned runs on 3 hits, striking out four and walking one.

Cassella, Wlosek, Worrilow and Danielle Spiro (South Windsor, CT) together went 10 for 14 at the plate and batted in a combined 7 runs in the second game while Hiltzik collected two hits for the Pioneers and Jessie Paull (Mercer Island, WA) and Laura Robitzek (Auburn, ME) each got a hit in Smith's loss. Hiltzik took her second loss of the day on the mound giving up seven earned runs on 14 hits, walking two and striking out four while Katie Anderson (Andover, MA) got the win allowing just 4 hits, striking out two and walking one.

The Pioneers will host Wellesley College at noon tomorrow.
